Many Victorians were introduced to locally born Jordan Reichert of the Animal Protection Party of Canada (APPC) in the 2015 federal election and he is excited to announce he will be returning as a candidate for the 2019 federal election.
Since 2015, Jordan has become the deputy leader of the APPC and helped the party double the number of candidates it is running across the country. After the 2015 federal election he began working for the Animal Alliance of Canada and he continues his decade of work in mental health and addictions with Island Health. Jordan attended Camosun College and completed a double major in sociology and philosophy at UVic in 2014.
Jordan has presented to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, met with senators and MP’s in Ottawa, and lobbied the federal, provincial, and municipal governments on a number of issues. In 2018 he challenged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Canada’s deplorable record on animal legislation at the Nanaimo stop of his town hall tour across Canada. Locally, Jordan is co-founder of the Vancouver Island Vegan Association and Vegtoria Veg Fest, and has helped raise thousands of dollars for local animal charities.
The Animal Protection Party of Canada was founded in 2006 with Liz White as the leader of the party, based out of Toronto, Ontario. Although the party’s name centres around animals, they recognize that they are the only political party in Canada seeking to represent the interests of people, animals, and the environment through what they call compassionate politics. Their platform covers topics from democratic reform and a guaranteed basic income, to ending animal agriculture and protecting half of Canada’s land mass from development and resource extraction.
“Victoria is ready for new member of parliament who is going to do what is needed to address climate breakdown, social inequity, and the plight of animals. There are really only two votes: one for the Animal Protection Party of Canada, or one for any of the other parties which will maintain the status quo. I do not believe the planet can cope with more status quo politics, that is why I am running.”
Reichert will be hosting a meet and greet at Green Cuisine Sept 4th, from 6-8pm. Facebook page here.
